Evolving accreditation in the assembly
Cooperativa Capel
Capel, one of Chile's leading pisco cooperatives, has run its assemblies with EVoting since 2021. Process after process, accreditation evolved from hand-written codes to on-demand QR printing, always keeping the member at the center.
Context
Capel —Cooperativa Agrícola Pisquera Elqui— is one of the country's leading pisco producers, founded in 1938, with more than 1,000 members and 4,500 hectares of vineyards. Each assembly elects its Board of Directors and its Oversight Committee. As a cooperative, the process requires a secret ballot and a legally valid quorum, a requirement that shapes the entire design of the solution.
Challenge
Capel came into 2021 with a postponed assembly and a particular condition: a large share of its members are older adults with little familiarity with technology. Voting had to be in-person and, even so, simple and reliable for the user. The challenge was to accredit and vote with agility, without giving up on security or legal validity.
Solution
Process after process, EVoting proposed the next improvement and built it together with Capel, turning a pen-and-paper accreditation into a fast, reliable check-in. In 2021, accreditation was manual: dozens of staff members wrote the code on each wristband with a marker, which caused lines, slowness and codes that were sometimes illegible. In 2022, the first scanners and a pre-printed barcode were introduced, eliminating manual entry, though the curvature of the wristband still made scanning difficult. Between 2022 and 2023, the code moved to a credential —a flat, single-person 'electronic passport' with instant scanning—, versions that also introduced assisted voting. In 2026, the code is printed on the spot and moved to QR, which reads even when worn or partially covered, with a unidirectional scanner: faster and more reliable. Every improvement came from observing the user, without giving up on security, transparency or legal compliance —the secret ballot and valid quorum required by the Cooperatives Law and the Ministry of Economy—, and was built together with Capel's team, year after year.
Results
Today, Capel's accreditation is fast and reliable, even for members facing a computer for the first time: from a hand-written code on a wristband in 2021 to an on-demand QR printed on the credential in 2026. EVoting took on the administrative and legal burden of the process —attendance, quorum and secret voting— across 7 consecutive processes, so Capel's team could focus on its assembly.
