Every September 15, since 2008, the International Day of Democracy has been celebrated, established by the UN to promote citizen participation and strengthen democratic values around the world.
Since 2008, September 15 has been observed as the International Day of Democracy, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2007. The initiative, driven by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and its Universal Declaration on Democracy, seeks to strengthen institutions and broaden citizen participation.
This date was chosen because ten years earlier—in September 1997—the IPU adopted the Universal Declaration on Democracy in Cairo, a milestone that established principles of representation and participation, reaffirmed the rule of law and human rights, and became a reference point for current democratic policies.
Through its website, the UN highlights: “The International Day of Democracy is an opportunity to remind that democracy should be centered on people. Democracy is both a process and a goal, and only with the full participation and support of the international community, governments, civil society, and individuals can the democratic ideal be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone everywhere.”
The day serves to make visible and defend democratic values, encourage informed participation, strengthen transparency and accountability, and promote public policies that guarantee rights and opportunities for participation for all people.
In short, September 15 reminds us that democracy is an ongoing process: it requires strong institutions, active citizenship, and technologies that facilitate access and participation. It is an invitation to measure, correct, and improve year after year.
EVoting, technology at the service of democracy
At EVoting, we are committed to democracy, offering technological solutions for various organizations that strengthen participation and guarantee security, confidentiality, and accessibility.
“Every day we strive to contribute to democracy in different organizations and settings, allowing more people to participate safely, simply, and transparently through technology,” emphasizes Felipe Lorca, CEO of EVoting.
From our standpoint, we want to continue strengthening democracy by driving participation processes that are safer, more transparent, and more trustworthy.
