SEPTEMBER 2022: OF TRAVELING, INFORMATION SECURITY AND DEMOCRACY “ON RAILS“

Written by EVoting Communications / 30 de Septiembre del 2022

EVoting experienced a varied month, which ended with an unexpected increase in votes.

September was a month of varied activities, from a commercial visit to Mexico, to a massive “on-rails” electronic vote, which ended with an increase in voting compared to the same month in 2021.

“Digital voting must be the way forward”

With a massive participation of 85% of its 700 members, the State Railway Company (EFE) elected the workers’ representative to the Board of Directors of the institution. An important and special process, given that many of them work in shifts and in different places, such as the Central Station, Maestranza, offices in Morandé and Agustinas streets, and also in Talca and Concepción.

In this second year of work with EVoting, there were also voting points in different places, where workers without internet connection or with difficulty in using technological equipment, voted from a tablet and with the support of EVoting personnel.

“Mexico is a country with many opportunities for us”

Several meetings with companies and clients, as well as conversations with representatives of the legal and academic world characterized EVoting’s visit to the Mexican capital during the first week of September.

Tomás Barros, EVoting’s General Manager, explained that the visit took place at a time when the North American country is undergoing a process of changes in its democracy “that have even led it to implement electronic voting for its citizens abroad”.

Electronic democracy with the same guarantees as traditional democracy

Democracy requires guaranteeing the legitimacy of each process, for which 6 main aspects must be ensured: the secrecy of the vote, access to all those who have the right to vote, a reliable authentication system, background information necessary for an informed vote, transparency that guarantees due process and responsible data management.

Felipe Lorca, EVoting’s Operations Manager, lists how the company has responded to each of these requirements.

15 processes in one week

Although September had been less intense than previous months, the truth is that the last week generated an avalanche of votes, reaching a total of 15. With this figure, the month completed 41 electronic votes, 5.12% more than in the same month of the previous year. Likewise, the total number of votes received amounted to 2,537,447.
