More than 25,000 residents of Temuco participated in the consultation on the redevelopment of the city center through EVoting's EParticipation e-democracy platform.
A total of 25,923 people participated this Friday and Saturday in the citizen consultation on the reorganization of the center and street commerce, organized by the Municipality of Temuco, Chile.
In the consultation, all citizens over 18 years of age who are registered in the electoral register of the commune had access to vote electronically: “We consider that this is an important opening of a new form of municipal governance, more than 25 thousand people voted, which is not unimportant. We thought we could be close to 20 thousand, which exceeded our expectations”, said the Mayor of Temuco, Roberto Neira.
Those eligible to vote had to answer, by remote voting, five questions on the reordering of the city center, where more than 93% voted in favor of reinforcing the measures to control illegal street commerce: “We are very happy as a municipality because it was something unprecedented, never before had Temuco developed a process of citizen participation like this, and at a national level there had never been a consultation on street commerce”, explained the mayor.
The president of the Temuco Chamber of Commerce, Gustavo Valenzuela, said: “This participation is important because it is democratic. Very important agreements are reached and the best thing of all is that decisions are made by the authority with the pronouncement of the entire community of our commune of Temuco”.
Felipe Lorca, EVoting’s Voting Manager, said: “The idea is to provide an effective, secure and transparent tool for people to participate in this decision making process (…) in this process people who were registered in the electoral roll of Temuco could participate directly in the consultation, where they voted from 26 countries around the world through EParticipation, our electronic democracy platform”.
