2009 was the first time that electronic voting was used for this process, a year in which participation increased considerably with respect to the previous period.

Last Sunday the results of the European Parliament elections were known and once again the citizens of Estonia were able to exercise their right to vote through the Internet.

Since 2005, the Baltic country has had this voting method and 2009 was the first time it was used to elect its Members of the European Parliament. On that occasion, 58,669 online votes were received and the participation rose from 26% to 44%, surpassing even the European Union average.

From then on, the number of Estonians who chose this modality went upwards, 103,151 in 2014 and reaching its highest point in 2019, when 155,521 votes were received.

In these latest elections, 153,269 people voted online, representing 41% of the total number of validly cast votes. It is worth noting that Estonia is the country with the least representation in the European Parliament, with only 7 seats, being 6 members the minimum that can be had.

The Baltic country stands out for the digitalization of processes, starting in 1996, when policies to bring people closer to innovation began. Today, the inhabitants of Estonia can carry out 99.9% of their procedures via the Internet, which saves them an average of 5 days a year.
