María Estrada Sánchez became the first woman to be elected as rector of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica and the election was carried out with EVoting's EUniversities platform.

A historic event took place this past Thursday, May 25 at the Technological Institute of Costa Rica (TEC). For the first time in its more than 50 years of history, a woman will be in the position of rector.

The Computer Engineer, Maria Estrada Sanchez, was elected with 45.51% of the votes, beating her main opponent, Jose Martinez Villavicencio, who obtained 26.26%.

“After 52 years, the Costa Rican Technological Institute has for the first time a female Rector. A woman will lead the country’s science and technology institution, a public university that is ready to take that step towards global positioning,” said Estrada at the end of the process.

In addition to the great milestone that the election of the engineer represents, this is the first time that TEC carries out this process through electronic voting and it was done with EVoting’s EUniversities platform.

After the results were published, the elected Rector expressed her joy for being living in a “historic” event and mentioned that it is an honor to be the first woman in the position.

María Estrada Sánchez, who currently serves as the Institute’s Vice Rector for Teaching, will take office on July 1 of this year and will conclude her term on June 30, 2027.
